Joint Vision began with a belief that caring for someone’s injury or condition should be a more connected experience. Patients should be able to understand their options, access the right people and move through their care with a team working together around them.

In August 2020, orthopaedic surgeon Dr Meghan Dares and her husband, Wynter Dares, opened the doors of what would become Joint Vision in a converted warehouse on Auburn Street, Wollongong. It was the middle of the COVID pandemic, and they were building a new model of care while navigating the challenges of starting a business.

Meghan brought her experience as a foot and ankle surgeon. Wynter brought a background in management consulting, education and entrepreneurship. Together, they wanted to address a familiar problem: patients having to find their way between separate appointments, providers and services, often carrying the responsibility for connecting their own care.

Soon afterwards, fellow foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sheraz Anjum joined the team, sharing that vision and helping build the organisation alongside them.

We then invested in an on-site imaging department, bringing X-ray and ultrasound into the centre. This meant patients could access these investigations in the same location as their consultations and treatment, without needing to visit a separate imaging provider. Having these services together also supported closer communication between our imaging and clinical teams.

From this foundation, Joint Vision grew, with Dr Anil Goudar joining the team to provide specialist hip and knee care, and Dr Jasan Dannaway bringing expertise across the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand.

Alongside this growth, we continued to build our allied health, nursing and rehabilitation services. Under the leadership of Alicia Frey and Kat Chounlamountry, our allied health team works closely with our surgeons and medical specialists in pain, rehabilitation and perioperative care.

Together, our surgeons and wider multidisciplinary team support people with a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions, from head to toe.

A founding principle of Joint Vision Orthopaedic Group is that musculoskeletal care should be accessible to everyone, regardless of whether they have private health insurance. All four surgeons, Dr Meghan Dares, Dr Sheraz Anjum, Dr Anil Goudar and Dr Jasan Dannaway, hold public appointments at Wollongong Hospital alongside their private practice at Joint Vision. Their commitment to working across both systems is an important part of the organisation’s contribution to the Illawarra.

Making our model work has meant developing shared systems and close clinical collaboration. Our Patient Services team, led by Renae Tapp, helps people navigate their appointments, while the clinicians involved stay connected around their care.

That work now extends into research through the Joint Vision Orthopaedic Research Institute, creating opportunities to investigate clinical questions and contribute to how musculoskeletal care develops.

Joint Vision remains a locally founded organisation with a long-term commitment to the Illawarra. We are continuing to build specialist capability here, so more people can access coordinated care close to home.
