Dr Sheraz Anjum

Dr Sheraz Anjum is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in foot and ankle conditions, with particular interests in ankle replacement, arthritis, complex deformity correction and limb reconstruction. His practice includes both surgical and non-surgical care for people with pain, restricted movement, instability and injuries affecting the foot and ankle.

He brings more than 15 years of Australian and international experience to Joint Vision. He also serves as Head of Department, Orthopaedics at Wollongong and Shellharbour Hospitals.

Training and qualifications

Dr Anjum completed his medical degree in 2002 and orthopaedic specialty training in 2010. He then spent four years working in the Middle East in foot and ankle surgery, trauma and limb reconstruction, gaining experience in the management of complex injuries and deformity.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association. His Australian Orthopaedic Association-accredited fellowships cover foot and ankle surgery, limb reconstruction and complex trauma management. He has also undertaken advanced training in minimally invasive surgery, ankle replacement and diabetic foot reconstruction.

Approach to treatment

Dr Anjum considers the cause of pain, alignment, joint movement and the activities a patient wants to return to. Treatment planning may include physiotherapy, activity modification, orthotic care or selected injections, with surgery considered according to the diagnosis, symptoms and patient preferences.

For ankle arthritis, his practice includes assessment for ankle replacement and fusion. For deformity and post-traumatic conditions, he considers the relationship between alignment, stability and function when planning reconstruction.

At Joint Vision, on-site imaging, podiatry, physiotherapy, nursing and rehabilitation can be coordinated around his specialist assessment. His complex trauma work is primarily delivered through the public hospital system as part of the regional orthopaedic service.

Research and teaching

Dr Anjum holds a Senior Lecturer appointment at the University of Wollongong. He teaches and mentors orthopaedic registrars, contributes to local and international conferences, and provides professional education for GPs, podiatrists and allied health clinicians.

• Ankle replacement and arthritis: ankle arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, midfoot and hindfoot arthritis, and big toe arthritis.
• Complex foot deformity: adult-acquired flatfoot, cavovarus deformity, severe bunion deformity and malalignment following injury.
• Minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery: keyhole techniques for selected conditions, including bunion correction.
• Sports injuries and instability: ankle ligament injuries, recurrent instability, cartilage lesions and stress injuries.
• Achilles and other tendon conditions: tendon rupture, tendinopathy and related foot and ankle disorders.
• Diabetic foot reconstruction: assessment and reconstructive planning for selected complex presentations.
• Trauma and limb reconstruction: complex injuries, limb realignment and fractures that have not healed or have healed in an abnormal position, principally through his hospital practice.
