GPs Join Joint Vision for Orthopaedic Update & Workshop Evening

General Practitioners from across the Illawarra joined the Joint Vision team last week for an RACGP-accredited Orthopaedic Workshop, an engaging evening designed to support GPs with practical, everyday knowledge across key musculoskeletal areas.

Held at Joint Vision Wollongong, the event brought together our four specialists who each delivered sessions aligned to their expertise. The workshop provided GPs with opportunities to learn, ask questions, and take part in hands-on demonstrations of orthopaedic equipment and prostheses used in modern practice.

Strengthening Primary Care Through Orthopaedic Education

Musculoskeletal presentations remain one of the most frequent reasons patients seek GP care. Joint Vision developed this workshop to help GPs feel more confident navigating common scenarios, understanding referral indicators, and discussing treatment options with patients.

The program included:

Foot & Ankle Injuries in Athletes

Presented by: Dr Meghan Dares

Dr Meghan Dares delivered a session focused on athletic foot and ankle injuries and considerations around prevention, assessment and return-to-sport guidance. The topic is highly relevant to GPs who regularly see injuries arising from weekend sport, recreational activity and training loads.

Bunions, Flat Foot & Ankle Arthritis

Presented by: Dr Sheraz Anjum

Dr Sheraz Anjum discussed the assessment of hallux valgus (bunions), adult flat foot and ankle arthritis, three conditions commonly seen in primary care. GPs were able to explore key clinical features, general management pathways and indicators for when further specialist input may be required.

Patient-Specific Total Hip Replacement Using the AMIS Approach

Presented by: Dr Anil Goudar

Dr Anil Goudar introduced GPs to the anterior minimally invasive (AMIS) approach to total hip replacement and the principles behind patient-specific planning. The session provided an overview of this modern technique and helped GPs better understand the evolving landscape of hip surgery.

Shoulder & Elbow Arthritis in GP Practice

Presented by: Dr Jasan Dannaway

Dr Jasan Dannaway presented on shoulder and elbow arthritis, focusing on how these conditions typically present in general practice and the role of conservative management, investigation pathways and specialist involvement.

A Valuable Night for GP–Specialist Collaboration

Alongside the educational sessions, GPs enjoyed opportunities to meet the surgeons, explore orthopaedic instruments and implants, and connect with colleagues across the region.

The strong attendance reflects the growing demand for locally delivered, practical CPD that supports frontline care and strengthens referral relationships across the Illawarra.

Joint Vision Orthopaedic Group CEO Wynter Dares noted the positive energy in the room and the value of bringing GPs and specialists together in a relaxed learning environment.

More GP Education Events Planned for 2026

Joint Vision will continue its RACGP CPD series in 2026, offering additional workshops across a range of orthopaedic topics.
